About the Bay of Islands
One of New Zealand’s top destinations, the Bay of Islands, is located south of the remote northernmost tip of New Zealand. Captain Cook gave the area its name almost two and a half centuries ago. The bay includes over 140 islands.
White sand beaches and bays stretch around a stunning coastline, with a plentiful marine wildlife. In summer visitors can stroll beneath the vivid scarlet pohutakawa trees, all part of a subtropical wonderland which has an average summer temperature of 24 degrees.
The Bay of Islands are 250km north of New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland which makes the destionation an easy day trip. Several overnight options are also available for people wish to spend more time in the Winterless North, especially if they wish to visit the Northernmost part of New Zealand, Cape Reinga.
More About this Tour
Visit the Waitangi Treaty House and Grounds overlooking the Bay of Islands, a site central to the birth of the nation and of significance to all New Zealanders. It was here on February 6th 1840 that the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed between Maori and the British Crown. On Waitangi Day some of the largest war canoes (waka) in the world take to the water.
A short ferry ride takes visitors from the vibrant seaside resort of Paihia to the elegant township of Russell, an early hub of European settlement and now a big-game fishing base. Once a busy whaling community, Russell is a popular destination where visitors can enjoy great seafood right on the waterfront.
Your deluxe coach will arrive back into Auckland at approx. 8.00pm.
